The Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott volition likely play several games, if not the whole season, later a federal guess Friday issued an injunction halting his suspension for a domestic corruption accusation.

Follow our live coverage of Due north.F.L. Week ane here.

The injunction lets Elliott, 1 of the league's biggest stars, play while he appeals a 6-game interruption that the National Football League commissioner, Roger Goodell, imposed every bit a issue of an accusation from July 2016 that Elliott beat his former girlfriend.

Prosecutors filed no charges confronting Elliott, citing inconsistent statements from witnesses, and he and the players' union, the Due north.F.L. Players Clan, appealed the suspension, saying, among other things, that Goodell did not hear out an Northward.F.L. investigator who doubted in that location was enough evidence to justify the penalisation.

The league had defended the penalty by maxim its investigators had closely reviewed the case and interviewed several witnesses, but Ezekiel'southward lawyers had cast doubt on that.

Still, this calendar week, a league-appointed arbitrator upheld the suspension, but because of a technicality related to the timing of the ruling Elliott was cleared to play in the squad'south flavor-opening game Sunday against the Giants. In response to the arbitrator's ruling, the union sought the injunction in federal court in Texas. Judge Amos L. Mazzant granted it while he hears the instance, which could take months, pregnant Elliott will likely play at least a good part of the flavor.

Mazzant said the case included "unique and egregious facts" that required "court intervention."

Soon after the injunction was issued, Elliott posted on Instagram a compilation video of some of his all-time plays from final season, including several touchdowns, set to the song "Wins and Losses" past Meek Mill.

"Momma told me if ya fall never stay down,'' Elliott wrote in the posting.

The league said in a statement that it would review the injunction and consider side by side steps "both in the district courtroom and federal court of appeals."

Elliott'south example echoes what happened to New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, who was suspended for four games in 2015. He ended upwards playing the unabridged season because a federal judge in New York overturned the intermission, which stemmed from a scheme by squad employees to deflate game balls. A federal appeals courtroom reinstated the suspension, then Brady did not play during the offset four games last flavor.

The Northward.F.L. has asked a federal gauge in New York to affirm the suspension. The league contends New York is the proper venue to hear such cases considering the league's headquarters is in the city. Not coincidentally, the league has won many cases in that courtroom.

However the instance ends, the fight will go on to strain relations betwixt the league and the spousal relationship.

The players association, which is representing Elliott in court, has long complained near the commissioner's broad authority to penalize players, a policy it says should be renegotiated.

"Commissioner subject area volition continue to be a distraction from our game for one reason: because N.F.L. owners have refused to collectively bargain a fair and transparent process that exists in other sports," the union said in a argument. "This 'imposed' organisation remains problematic for players and the game, merely equally the honest and honorable testimony of a few N.F.L. employees recently revealed, it also demonstrates the continued lack of integrity inside their own league office."

Though Goodell has softened his position on the personal conduct policy by no longer hearing appeals himself, he continues to appraise suspensions. And while the league has hired investigators to do their ain inquiry split up from law enforcement, inconsistencies remain in how the league determines which players should be suspended and for how long.

Last flavor, the North.F.L. suspended the Giants identify kicker Josh Brown for one game after he admitted to squad officials that he had driveling his wife.

But post-obit a public uproar after the police in Washington State, where the attack occurred, released documents last October revealing many more details about the case, including Brown'southward writings most being "physically, verbally and emotionally" abusive to his wife, the league suspended him indefinitely with pay.

On Friday, the league suspended Brown, who is at present a gratis agent without a squad, for an boosted six games after spending nearly a year evaluating boosted evidence related to his example.
